Spock's Katra or essence, was placed into McCoy before the big death scene. If so, it should only contain his memories up until that point. Yet, the lines which jar him back to himself are all from the death scene which occurred after the fact. Anybody have any ideas about this? P.S. I don't buy that the extra memories came from McCoy.

Yes, Spock's essense is transfered to McCoy before the end. That is WHY he restates what he said afterwards! His "katra" had no recollection of what happened after the transfer, but he did have the question about the ship being out of danger needing to be answered! Just an opinion....... He asked Kirk when he recognized him and i figured he didn't remember because the Katra wa placed in McCoy before that. I don't buy that the extra memories came from McCoy. I did not see this a goof. I immediately assumed that, once Spock started to get his memory back, he would remember everything up to the moment his katra was placed in McCoy. He would then ask a question for which he could not have had an answer, namely "The ship. Out of danger?". And, seeing Kirk, (and perhaps still believing that his life was forfeit, says: "I have been, and always shall be, your friend." ---------------- Donald A. The subject of Spock's memories was thoroughly discussed on the net a few weeks ago. Let's try not clutter things up again so soon.

#R:aecom:-72800:uok:8400078:000:807 uok!dwhitney Jul 5 20:22:00 1984 Everyone is missing the whole point!!! Spock's Katra DID NOT JUMP to McCoy UNTIL HE DIED!! If his essence had transferred before, (i.e. All that he knew, to borrow a phrase) then he could not possibly have known how to pull the switch on the warp engines!!! When he died, his Katra KNEW where to go, McCoy picked it up, and all the stuff he supposedly "couldnt have remembered" he DID remember, vaguely, and more certainly as Kirk quoted lines he REMEMBERED..... Okay?? Think about it. After Spock dies, McCoy says, "He's really not dead, as long as we REMEMBER him." Its the only possible solution. Not all the lines fit from the scene in ST2 from Spock's quarters, (i.e. Ship out of danger, etc.) If you read the novel from ST3, this explanation makes more sense.... Nuff said. David Whitney

The lines "The needs ..." were also spoken when Kirk took control of the big E. Long before Spock committed suicide. See STII. Just after C. Marcus calls about JTK taking the GD.
