Talk about religious zealots! You guys sound as if every Star Trek
episode is GOSPEL! Now don't get me wrong, I like Star Trek. It's jsut
that with different writers on every episode, most of whom probably
never wrote for that kind of show before, you can't expect them to kow
what went on before, so there are bound to be inconsistencies. Also,
as time went by, they probably thought of better ways to do things on
the show, so I would consider the later episodes to have more authority
as to how things worked.

But I don't by any means expect the writers to be infallible in all details.
I expect there to be incosistencies or "dumb" ideas in everything I watch.
I just expect a good show to keep these to a minimum. This includes movies.

So let's not quote episodes as the final authority on how things work. After
all, we've had 20 years of newer technology to improve things with.

Why not discuss how things SHOULD work, given our better understanding of
cuurrent and future technology, especially computers?
