Therefore the path is something like: 1. inform the computer of your request. 2. put in card corresponding to kitchen, cafeteria,or something like that. 3. the computer looks at card and accesses the correct field. 4. and sends back what it's been told to send. of course this is all just a theory, but it does seem to be the only possible explanation, unless of course someone else has a better idea.

{ Maybe they get their food from reprocessed lines... } One problem with the concept of a voice control: There are episodes where Jim is talking to Spock about vital matters, sticks his card in, and gets dinner, without saying anything. Now, in theory, there could be a default. However, the idea of having it remember foods that were said could be great for practical jokes. I run into the room, walk up to one of the machines and say "Reconstituted Slime on an Onion Bagel" and run away. Someone else walk up and says "Peanut Butter and Jelly" and gets two things: PB&J and RConOB. And gets charged for both. He gets pissed. Also, it could be kind of fun if while you're ordering, someone else at the table near the machine says "Oh Shit." Good way to ruin your lunch. -- Peter Merchant

After seeing all the possiblities of this question, I don't think anyone proposed this solution to the food cassettes. What if the cassetes were not cassettes at all but food packettes. These food packettes are compressed meal totally containing the food the requester wants. They stick this packette in and the machine adds water making a instant meal. (French Chief eat your heart out) The only draw back to this solution is - how did the tribbles get into the food processor in the "Trouble with Tribbles" (My favorite episode)? bon appettite!!!! -- Spock never says "live long and prosper" to tribbles John T.
