Maybe I'm passing on information that you already know, but the animated ST episode 'The Slaver Weapon' is based on a Larry Niven story entitled 'The Soft Weapon'. It's a part of one of his anthologies, either 'Tales from Known Space' or 'Neutron Star' (I forget which). The comment that Nessus makes in 'Ringworld' is related to that pre- vious incident. Niven himself wrote a script for the animated show that was an adaptation of his Known Space story "The Soft Weapon" (which is in his collection NEUTRON STAR). It was amusing to see Spock take the place of Nessus. Also, other animated episodes made reference to the Kzinti. In one of the STAR TREK LOG books (which adapt the animated episodes), I think it was #5, Alan Dean Foster mentions that the Caitians (of which the alternate communications officer, Lt. M'Hress, is one) are another branch of the same race that produced the Kzinti, a la the Vulcans and the Romulans. --- jayembee (Jerry Boyajian, DEC, Maynard, MA) UUCP: {decvax|ihnp4|allegra|ucbvax|...}!decwrl!dec-rhea!dec-akov68!boyajian ARPA: boyajian%akov68.DEC@DECWRL.ARPA

[The world is a Klein bottle] I hope Larry realizes how confusing he's made things. I first heard of the Kzinti from the animated ST "Slaver Weapon"; then, a few years later, I read Ringworld where he has Nessus (the same one) telling Speaker-To-Animals & his pals that he once kicked in the ribs of Chuft-Captain over in the Beta Lyrae area... maybe the nova twisted space and time to such an extent that the two events overlapped? --bsa -- Brandon Allbery: decvax!cwruecmp{!atvax}!ncoast!bsa: R0176@CSUOHIO.BITNET ^ Note name change! 6504 Chestnut Road, Independence, OH 44131 <> (216) 524-1416 "The more they overthink the plumbin', the easier 'tis tae stop up the drain."
