[net.startrek] The meaning of Sulu's first name

cw@vaxwaller.UUCP (Carl Weidling) (09/24/84)

When I was in the navy and stationed in Japan I learned
a little of the language. As I recall, "hikaru" means
something like light ray, an interesting touch when they
were coming up with names I think.

Are there any Japanese language mavens out there to correct
me or amplify on the meaning?

Even better, are there students of the Russian language who can tell us just
what it was Chekov said to Scott on the bridge near the beginning of Star Trek
III: The Search for Spock?
