At the end of STII as the genisis wave begins its work the special effects people did
a remarkable job of showing (my opnion) the transition from a lifeless AIRLESS
hunk of rock to a planet. Any mass the size of a moon or planet would have gravity
regardless of anything else, the only question would be would the
rotational physics be adequate and what would happen as the mass of the planet/moon
was suddenly changed with respect to that rotation as the atmosphere extened
up from the planet hence changing the inertial moment of the mass

By the way, the graphics used for those scenes were generated by a computer
running Unix.
