The episode was, I believe, "The Galileo Seven", Spock, McCoy, Scotty, and a couple doomed red shirts crash in the shuttle craft while investigating a quasar. Kirk is forced by the VIP to abandon search, but leaves at "space-normal speed". The common technical term is REAL SLOW, because the Enterprise was able to detect Spock's distress flare and rescue them just before the shuttle craft was crisped on reentry.
