*** YOUR MESSAGE *** Which came first, the word "dunsel", or the episode "The Ultimate Computer"? I've seen it used around here by people who have no idea where it came from. -- Mark A. ...uw-beaver!ssc-vax!adolph "Computers are like preppies: they just boil around in their own way and you have to do things their way or they blow you off." If you mean, which came first in the ST universe, the word "dunsel" was described as an Academy term. It clearly antedated that episode. If you mean, which came first in the TV series, this was the first episode to use the term. (In fact, as far as I can recall, it was the only one.)

> If you mean, which came first in the ST universe ... > If you mean, which came first in the TV series ... I think what he meant was whether the term "dunsel" existed before the "Ultimate Computer" episode was written, possibly as a naval slang term or was it created ("coined") for that episode by Gene Roddenberry (who wrote it). I wish I had the answer, but at least I can clarify the question!

I believe that the United States Military Academy (WestPoint) originally coined the term dunsel. It would only be a logical string that such terms would outlive their originators and be carried over into the Military Schools (Star Fleet Academy - Earth) which would of course be their succesors. =============================================================================== From the mostly vacant environment of Jeanette L.
