Hmmm. Are you suggesting that in the 23d century, coming back from
the dead is a criminal offense???? :-)

No problem, really. I posted a 100+ line proposed plot for ST IV nearly a
year ago that solved that problem. Consider yourself lucky that I'm not
reposting it! :-)

What does the military do when someone disobeys orders, yet wins the battle
and/or comes back covered with glory? It promotes the perpetrator to a dead
end job, of course. My suggestion was that Kirk is thrown in the hoosegow,
awaiting court-martial. However, public acclaim of Kirk's actions prevents
Star Fleet from throwing the book at Kirk, so they hand him a medal and promote
him to command a star base waaaaaayyyyyyyyyy out in the boonies where he
can't get in any more trouble (little do they know...). They blackmail Kirk
into accepting by threatening to prosecute Sulu, Scott, et all. Sulu assumes
command of the last Constitution-class cruiser to be launched (which, to
further capitalize on the public acclaim, is renamed Enterprise at the
commisioning ceremony), Chekov is his first officer, Uhura takes command
of a Reliant-class scout (she has seniority over Chekov). Sarek retires
again, Spock takes over as ambassador, Saavik is his aide-de-camp, and
Scotty is forcibly retired- Excelsior's captain is all too willing to
raise a stink about sabotage (don't worry though... he gets back in later).

Sorry about redoing all that (the original posting had full explainations
for these assignments, as well as a plot summary). The crew HAS to be
promoted to command sometimes... if Sulu, Scott, and Uhura had been in the
current military, they're would have been involuntarily separated years
ago. It's called "Up or Out!"

Persons suggesting that the new ship will be named, "Enterprise II" will
be flamed by the largest impulse engine I can find. Be warned.
