I am an avid Star Trek fan, and I place The Wrath of Kahn (TWOK) as number four on my all time favorite movie list. It is my number four not just because it is Star Trek, but because it was a well crafted movie, about a man who faces his own mortality. The fact that that man happens to be James Kirk makes it (for me) a five star movie. But this movie would be a good movie in any setting, not just the Star Trek universe. I've seen the original version of TWOK many times, so I could easily pick out the scenes which were added for TV. Am I the only one on the net who is not pleased with the additions? Granted that some of the additions were valuable, but many were not. It would have been nice to know about Scotty's nephew, but the scene where his nephew spoke out to Kirk was not believable, and more importantly took away from the flow of the movie. It slowed down Kirk's inspection, and made Kirk seem less anxious to get underway with the training mission. And Kirk being anxious is one of the keys to the movie, that he should be a captain (His first best destiny), and not an admiral. My biggest complaint comes from a very small addition on the Genesis space station. The Reliant is coming, and the scientists are arguing what to do. The original version ends with someone saying, "But what about Reliant, she's on her way." (not an exact quote) The original then cuts to the Enterprise, but the TV version adds the following dialogue: (again, not exact quotes) Carol Marcus: Ok, everyone, get your things. Someone: Where are we going? Carol Marcus: That's for us to know and Reliant to find out. This short addition takes away the suspense of the scene when Kirk, McCoy and Saavik beam to the space station. They don't find anyone at first, and you would think that is because they got away. But in the original, at first you're not sure what's happening. Then when they find the bodies, for a minute you think that perhaps everyone has been killed, until Kirk realizes that Carol and David aren't among the bodies. It seems to me that those three lines really change the feeling of a long and suspenseful scene. _I'M_ very glad that those lines weren't in the original. I could comment on other additions, but this is long enough. (I know I'm nitpicking, but sometimes it seems nitpicking is the character of net.startrek :-)# Any comments? Am I alone in thinking the network could have (and maybe should have) left TWOK as it was? TTFN, ____________________ Droyan | | ..ihnp4!bentley!dxa | "Meow?" After watching so many reruns, it's always nice to see some NEW trek. But I'm also glad that the original did not contain these additions. Unlike other posted opinions, I found the original to be far superior to the TV version.
