Just a few ramblings

CAPTAIN KIRK--STAR WHORE

One really sucky thing about Star Trek is the way that Kirk will never
hesistate to make out with any girl for virtually any reason. He will
do it to save his ship, his ass, his crew, etc. etc. The only episode
where he seemed to actually feel something for anyone was "City on the
Edge of Forever" and this, among other things, made the episode quite
a few cuts above the rest, in my opinion.

Scotty in love is pretty pathetic, look at "Zetar" and "Adonis." What the
heck happens with his flames after the end of the episode?

Spock was pretty good in "All Our Yesterdays", but ignores Chapel and
his own wife-to-be.

McCoy was pretty good, I thought, in "For the World is Hollow..."

WILLIAM SHATNER--HAMMING CODE

William Shatner is one of the world's absolutely worst actors, but in-
explicably, this makes the show even more lovable. Anyway, I'm trying
to determine his hammiest performance. "Turnabout Intruder" is pretty
good when he and the chick start returning to their respective bodies.

THE EARLY EPISODES

Just saw "Where no man..." This was, of course, the first episode filmed.
It's a little rough on the edges, and you can really see the tie-in
between "The Cage" and the later episodes with terms as "hyperdrive" and
"intercraft." Spock smiles as he says: "Irritation? Ah, yes, one of
your human emotions."

And yet, this episode, along with "The Cage" is so full of energy and
freshness that it's amazing--especially since the local network showed
it after a lot of really dismal third season episodes. The suspense
builds beautifully, breaking the barrier of the galaxy, finding the
recording bouy, slowly watching Mitchell metamorphize, and realizing
what had happened to the first ship, and what they must do about it.

One of the great things about these early episodes is that the characters
are not caricatures of themselves, something which becomes almost in-
tolerable in a lot of the later episodes.

COLOR CHANGES

An interesting thing about this episode is the color of the officer's
uniforms. Sulu wears blue, indicating sciences division, in later episodes,
he wears gold indicating command. Spock goes from gold to blue. Scotty
goes from gold to red (support division.)

STARGAZERS

Ever notice how many 'celebrities' there are in startrek? You know,
"Of course, (Dr.) so-and-so revolutionized such-and-such... required
reading at the academy."
For example, there's Dr. Roger Corby and ancient medicine, Dr. Adams and
penal colonies, the brilliant Dr Roykirk inventor of Nomad, Cochran, in-
ventor of the warp drive, Captain Garth space explorer and
Dr whassisname inventor of Duotronics (and M4). This doesn't even include t
those cases where we are treated to the exposed identity of "real" historical
figures such as Jack the Ripper, DaVinci, Mozart, et. al.

I HATE the WPIX versions of startrek! They butcher them like mad!
But unfortunately, i have to watch them because they are the only
ones who show them.
