If you had paid more attention to the REST of the original posting,
it would have been clear this outcome is COMPLETELY logical--Kirk
had just saved the whole galaxy (Klingons and Romulans as well, by
default) from an invasion force.  The incident was WIDELY PUBLICIZED
and the public was clamoring "KIRK!, KIRK!, etc. etc.  With all that
public opinion in Kirk's favor, anybody short of the Commander-in-Chief
would probably get canned for even SUGGESTING Kirk be court-martialed.
I suspect even the Commander-in-Chief him/herself would be committing
political suicide by such an act.

It's a wonder they weren't forced to PROMOTE him!!
