[net.startrek] Ship Designations

mike@dolqci.UUCP (Mike Stalnaker) (04/23/85)

I just got done checking some references, and here's the scoop
on Aircraft Carrier designations. In the 1950's and 1960's, there were
3 basic classes of carriers CVA's (Attack Carriers like the Kitty Hawk,
Forrestal, etc), CVS (Support Carriers (Carrier Vessel Support) like the
Iwo Jima and the John Hancock),and CVL's (Light Carriers, no names come
to mind, and CVS/CVL desig seems to be sorta gray.). When the
Enterprise was commissioned, she was commisioned as a CVAN (Carrier
Vessel, Attack, Nuclear). Later, the CVS and CVL designations were done
away with, and we now have CVA and CVN, the only difference being that the
CVN's are Nuclear powered.
