[net.startrek] Born again STAR TREK ???

cjbiggin@watmath.UUCP (Colin Biggin) (05/11/85)

There seems to be a "minor" debate brewing as to whether there
should be another Star Trek created on TV. Just to fuel the
fires of possible controversy, I'll add my $3.61 worth...

First off, I am going to flame all those people out there who think
that Captain James T. Kirk and (less... much less importantly) William
Shatner are "essential" to STAR TREK. I agree that it would be
anathema to have any body else play the role of Capt. Kirk or any of
the others. But thar's the rub matey... I (that's with a capital)
think that Bill should be given the heave-ho and the others to boot.

Throughout this group I have been reading that William Shatner has
just agreed to sign on for STIV. (excuse the language)

                  WHIPPY FUCKING SHIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We can all tell what Star Trek means to the li'l kid from Montreal can't
we. It means an even cushier retirement. Bad enough he's making lord
knows how much from residuals and from TJ Hooker. I don't really
believe that as a loyal STAR TREK (not Bill Shitner) fan, that I should
have to tolerate this.

      /*  Now the climax */

I think that they should develop a new TV series based on the Adventures
of Star Trek and they should use total unknowns as the main characters.
And I think that even an occasional guest appearance by one of the ol'
regulars could be stomached.

Now, I know that there are probably a lot of you out there in UNIX-land
saying to themselves: Who the hell does this unbelieving pipsqueek Canuck
think he is??? Well, I am probably the most dedicated Star Trek fan
around ('tis true I tell you... 'tis true...) But I think that the
present crowd ran out of gas a long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away...8-) )

Time to stop living on past glories ( **cliche warning** ) and move onto
bigger and better and new things. The Star Trek framework is probably
the best TV SF available. Use it!! But for Spock's sake throw out the rusty
old has beens who ARE no more !!!

                                           Sincerely,
                                           Colin Biggin
