[net.startrek] Star Trek sounds

dr37@sphinx.UChicago.UUCP (Joanna Bryson) (05/21/85)

I saw an episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE which started with two astronauts
in a very bad rocket/capsul/spaceship thing that made Star Trek bridge noises.
"why do they have real noises in such a fakey set" I wondered at that late
hour. Incidently, the girl from "The Cage" played the alien love interest in
that episode.

You DO realize (don't you?) that it's actually STAR TREK that used TWILIGHT
ZONE spaceship noises for bridge sound effects? :-) TZ ran '59-'63
(or maybe '58-'62, I forget exactly). TREK was '67-'69.

I've heard sound effects used on STAR TREK in many many places, in shows made
both before, and after STAR TREK's run on TV. Unfortunately, I can't seem to
remember any since they usually happen quickly and I only have time to say
"hey, listen to that!" before it's over. I've heard them in shows produced
recently, too, so they still pull them out of a can somewhere.

Hmmm... I wonder if it's only NBC shows I've noticed them in recently.
'Course, TZ was on CBS, so that could shoot that theory in the foot.

You know, a LOT of TV shows use that exact same sound effects
recording to represent the sounds of a room full of a lot of sophisticated
equipment. To name just one, I think of a laboratory depicted in an episode
of *I Dream of Jeannie*. It is used constantly in cartoons and in
sketches on variety shows. It seems that the television world
assumes that either a) we watch only one television program; b) we
have no auditory memory; or c) is too dirt cheap to invest in more
production company. Or it might be a combination of any or all of the
above. At any rate, it is an insult to our intelligence and taste,
to say the least.

{no, I still haven't worked out how to quote properly :-)}

No, no, no, TZ used ST sounds, see, the Enterprise isn't the only ship to have
time accidents, and most of the people who have fallen back have to go to LA so
people won't consider them strange (where do you think Gene R. heard about all
this to begin with?)
Incidently, I've noticed that Shakespeare tends to plagerize ST titles.
