[net.startrek] "The Beatles Look" in the 23rd Century?

merchant@dartvax.UUCP (Peter Merchant) (07/23/85)

Last night I was watching "Catspaw" (one I haven't seen since I was 13) and
I noticed that Walter Koenig looked outrageously out of place on the bridge
and I couldn't figure out why until it struck me.

Checkov has the beatles look!

He was the only person there with long hair. Anyone have any clue about this?
Engineer LaSalle (or DeSalle or whatever his name was) had short hair.
Jim, Scotty, Spock, Bones, and Sulu all had short hair. My memory fails on
me now...did Checkov ever get his hair cut?

"Just like that duck, Peter Merchant
all she wants to do is..."

They wanted Chekov to appeal the young teenage females. The
prototype, I believe, was actually supposed to be David Jones of the
Monkees.

"Oh, sir, it was Kahn! He made us sing stupid songs and star in
a mediocre tv series... But Michael Nesmith was strong!"

Yes, Chekov did cut his hair later in the series. When I saw
Chekov's hair in Catspaw, in comparison with his hair later, I
thought maybe he was wearing a WIG in that (and a couple of other)
shows! His hair is shorter and thinned out later.

It WAS a wig! They let his hair grow a bit longer for later
episodes. If you need references, I can give them.

Chekov was wearing a wig. David Gerrold mentions in his book on the
making of "The Trouble with the Tribbles" that Chekov's hair was too
short when they made his first episode, and so they had to go shopping
for wigs.
