Having just seen the episode on the videotape device, and having just posted a second 100+ line aviation trivia quiz on net.aviation, I feel qualified to answer this once and for all. They were strafed by: a Grumman F6F Hellcat a Chance-Vought Corsair a North American T6/SNJ ... depending upon what point you look closely. They used file footage for these shots, obviously. Even the closeup shot of the airplane firing is of the old 50s era modified T6/SNJ aircraft from some war movie. What's-is-face must have been changing his mind, or something... Another interesting point is that US insignia is clearly visible in the shot of the F6F. Makes you wonder what side Star Fleet is on :-).
