[net.startrek] More Trivia Answers

eric@oakhill.UUCP (Eric Quintana) (08/28/85)

I got some interesting responses to my trivia questions.
I will now try to answer them. A new set of questions is
included at the end of the answers. Here are my answers:

  1) How many episodes can you name in which Spock smiles?
(NOT just smirks but actually smiles.)
     [There are at least 6.]

When I asked this question, I was referring to very large,
obvious, show-me-some-teeth smiles. Here are the episodes
     I had in mind:

     1. "This Side of Paradise" after he is hit by the spores.
     2. "Amok Time" when he sees that Kirk is in fact alive.
     3. "The Menagerie" when he is amused by the humming plants.
     4. "Return to Tomorrow" when his body is possessed by Henoch.
     5. "Plato's Stepchildren" when he is being tortured by Parmen.
     6. "Is There In Truth No Beauty" when his body is possessed by
the Medusan, Kolos. (No one remembered this one.)

The following is a list of episodes in which Spock grins.
You will notice that most of these are early episodes. The
character of Spock had not been fully developed and thus he
shows more emotion in them than in the later episodes. This
is especially apparent in the first episode (The Cage/Menagerie).

"Where No Man Has Gone Before", "The Enemy Within", "Charlie X",
"All Our Yesterdays", "What Are Little Girls Made Of?"

Are there more? Probably a lot!

  2) How many episodes can you name in which the transporter is
NOT used (implied or otherwise) ?
     [There's more than one.]

I believe there are only three:

     1. "Balance of Terror"
     2. "Immunity Syndrome"
     3. "Journey to Babel"

In response to some of your answers:
They use the transporter in "Wolf in the Fold" to beam Jack the
Ripper into deep space (wide dispersal).
I think that they beam back to the ship at the end of "Spectre
of the Gun". I'm not sure. Can someone verify this?

  3) How many episodes can you name in which a double was used
for Captain Kirk? (NOT a stunt double.) For example, there
are some episodes in which there are two Kirks on the screen
at the same time. Beware! Be sure your double is not just
a video special effect. [Most people can name two episodes
fairly fast, but is that all?]

     And the answers are:

     1. "Enemy Within" in which Kirk fights himself.
     2. "Whom Gods Destroy" in which Kirk fights Lord Garth as Kirk.
     3. "What Are Little Girls Made Of" in which Dr. Korby creates an
android of Kirk. However, some people might say, "But wait!
The android is just a video effect." This is only partially
true. There are two brief scenes in which the android is not
played by William Shatner. One scene is when Kirk and the
android are spinning on the round table and the table is
slowing to a stop. The table stops with William Shatner facing
the camera; but wait! Run your VCR in slow motion reverse and
freeze the frame when the table has reversed 180 degrees. Who
	is that?!? Not William Shatner.

And now for some more trivia...

  1) How many episodes can you name in which Spock cries?
     (CRIES, not just feels sad.)
     [There's more than one.]

  2) How many episodes can you name in which a phaser is on
overload? [There are more than two.]

  3) How many episodes can you name in which an alien experiences
'new sensations'? (I can think of five episodes in which
the alien makes a statement to the effect that he/she/it is
     experiencing a 'new sensation'.)

BONUS QUESTION:
When Sulu and others are trapped on the cold planet in "The
Enemy Within" due to a transporter malfunction, why don't
they (Kirk or Spock) send down a shuttle craft to rescue them?

I await your response. Enjoy!

After puzzling some time over your answers to item #1 I realized that your
problem is that you do not know the definition of "grin". Check your
dictionary. Smile is "upward curvature of the lips" etc. whereas grin
is "drawing back of the lips to show the teeth" etc. (Incidentally I did
mention "Is there in truth..." but doubtless my answer was too late to
make your tallying of the results since I had been on vacation.)
As of item #2 - I can verify that the transporter was not used. The
Melkotians zap them straight back tothe bridge instantaneously, so far
as we can tell.
I believe the answer to New Question 1 is: Naked Time, and Plato's
Stepchildren.
