This is old news now, but since I never saw it posted, I thought I was mention it for those who care: Channel 11 New York has once again begun running Star Trek, at 12:30 AM, Monday-Friday, and midnight on Sundays. (These are all actually the next day.) I have heard that they are new tapes of the show, and are uncut. I have not heard Ch. 11 advertise this fact, and have not yet stayed up to watch all of one, tho one night I did see a scene that I did not recognize. I taped Menagerie Part I last night, in hopes of being able to tell. If anyone knows one way or another, please post the info, as I am sure many netters would be interested in this. The tapes do look cleaner than before... --Evan Marcus -- {ucbvax|decvax}!vax135!petsd!petfe!evan ...!pedsgd!pedsga!evan Who messed with my anti-paranoia shot?

My big beef is that they moved it back a half-hour, to 12:30 from midnight. It was bad enough before. I mean some of us (*without* VCRs) get up at 6 or so... And I'm sure there are more people interested in Trek than in "Dance Fever" and "Puttin on the Hits" (and other likeminded bullshit). So why don't they put it back on Saturday afternoons? I did catch most of Menagerie I last night, and I agree the tapes are much cleaner. As to them being uncut, I don't know. Does the show run substantially past 1:30, or have noticeably fewer commercials? That's the way to tell. "Laddie--Doon't ya think ya shoold...rephrase that?" Scott J. Berry ihnp4!hou2g!scott

I don't think the tapes are untouched - they're simply better than before. In the episode you mentioned ("The Menagerie"), at least the following two scenes were missing: - Landing party dresses up before beaming down to Talos IV. This is where we see two technicians operating the transporter. The first time we see them, the one at the back is wearing eyglasses, which he has taken off the second time he appears. - No.1 tells Vina that there actually was a crewman with that name in the lost ship and, according to her records she must be n years (i.e. very) old. However, we *did* see the entire dialogue scene between Pike and the ship's doctor, as well as No. 1's attempt to blast the cave entrance with a huge laser (which brings up the question: if in Pike's time they were using lasers, when did phasers come to being? what does "phaser" stand for?) Anyway, I believe that *this* butchered version is better than the original one :-) -- Kriton (princeton!tilt!kyrimis) ------ "It is... um... somewhat... uncomplimentary, Captain; Herbert was a minor official notorious for his rigid and limited patterns of thought." ------

I have watched Star Trek on WPIX for many years and though the episode(s) was butchered, those scenes were always in there. As for the other scenes, you seem to be implying that we didn't see the dialogue or laser scene before. The laser scene was always there, too. However the dialogue scene, though present, was cut short. It used to have Dr. Boyce coming in, saying a few things (perhaps setting up his "bar"), and then a cut to the intercom whistling and Spock reporting that they have intercepeted a followup message. The entire scene has Pike talking about fighting on Rigel, being back home, being a trader, etc. Nathan Glasser mit-eddie!nathan (uucp) nathan@mit-xx (arpa)

/***** orstcs:net.startrek / tilt!kyrimis / 6:44 pm Oct 18, 1985*/ they were using lasers, when did phasers come to being? what does "phaser" stand for?) Kriton (princeton!tilt!kyrimis) /* ---------- */ ``Phaser'' comes from the idea of PHASing EneRgy -- these weapons supposedly emit large quantities of energy that interfere with normal energy patterns (if you've had physics, you'll know that all matter is made of "wave-packets", which phasers interfere with in the standard wave mechanics sort-of-way)... This explanation came from ``The Making of Star Trek'' (The physicist has struck again) (actually, I'm in Computer Science, I really am not completely sure of what I'm saying). <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> "All that is gold does not glitter; jamesp Not all those who wander are lost."
