Carol Marcus was NEVER mentioned in that episode. The original poster was completely correct that Kirk and Marcus were never married. At one point inside the Regula cave, the two were discussing their relationship. Kirk says he did what she wanted; he stayed away from David. He asks her why she didn't tell him about David and so forth. She says she wanted David in her world. She also says at one point, "Weren't we to be . . ." and then trails off. The next word just HAS to be "married" or its equivalent. -- "It's only by NOT taking the human race seriously that I retain what fragments of my once considerable mental powers I still possess!"
