So far I have the following: Enterprise NCC - 1701 James T. Kirk Lexington Robert Wesley Hood Potemkin Exeter Ron Tracey Defiant Can anyone complete this list or add to it?

Constitution NCC-1700 Enterprise NCC-1701 Constellation Lexington Hood Potemkin Exeter Defiant Intreped Yorktown + 2 others I can't remember (all listed in the Star Fleet Tech. manual). There were 12 ships in the class originally, with another 30 or so approved for building in the SFTM. > I am casually making a list as I watch the episodes of the names of all > the starships in the fleet that were of the same type as the Enterprise. > their captains and (serial?) numbers. I compiled the following list by using the ST Technical Manual and the Concordance: Constellation NCC-1717 Matt Decker (lost in line of duty) Constitution NCC-1700 (class ship) Enterprise NCC-1701 James T. Kirk Excalibur NCC-1705 Harris Exeter NCC-1706 Ron Tracy Farragut NCC-1702 Garrovick (lost in line of duty) Hood NCC-1707 Intrepid NCC-1708 (lost in line of duty) (all Vulcan) Kongo NCC-1710 Lexington NCC-1703 Robert Wesley Potempkin NCC-1711 Republic NCC-1371(?) Valiant NCC-1709 (lost in line of duty) Yorktown NCC-1704 Can anyone fill in the rest of the holes? The Technical Manual lists the Republic as NCC-1371, but the Concordance lists it as NCC-1373. How about the Intrepid (manned entirely by Vulcans--- how did Sarek ever agree to that ?) The Excalibur (that's the ship M5 killed) and I believe there was one called the Constitution, but I don't remember what episode it was in. This is probably a good time to remind people NOT to followup on a net item untill you have read all of the group, so you don't create redundancies (so I can't spell) There've been a few lately. OK boys and girls, here is the list of the starship names so far put together from replies to my original article. Apparently the technical manuals list 14 ships, yet someone mentioned that there were 12. Now the numbers show 12 ships ranging from NCC-1700 to NCC-1711 plus 2 more with odd numbers. So maybe the odd two are not the same kind of ship or were just supposed to have been later models, who knows. You will also notice that for the two ships, I received more than 1 number. The Doomsday Machine was the one with Matt Decker wasn't it? Well then let's all gather around the set, get our booze bottles lined up, chug when Kirk says "Kirk here..." and watch that episode closely and see just what that number is. I'd still like to know if there were any more captains names dreamed up for all these ships without leaders. 1 Constellation NCC-1717 1071 1704 Matt Decker (lost) 2 Constitution NCC-1700 (training ship) 3 Enterprise NCC-1701 James T. Kirk (stolen) 4 Excalibur NCC-1705 Harris 5 Exeter NCC-1706 Ron Tracy (crew dead) 6 Farragut NCC-1702 Garrovick (lost) 7 Hood NCC-1707 8 Intrepid NCC-1708 (lost) (all Vulcan) 9 Kongo NCC-1710 10 Lexington NCC-1703 Robert Wesley 11 Potempkin NCC-1711 12 Republic NCC-1371 1373 13 Valiant NCC-1709 (lost) 14 Yorktown NCC-1704 Joe Hitchens

Johnson SUNY/Buffalo Computer Science I saw "Tomorrow is Yesterday" the other night and Kirk told Captain <memory blank - the pilot beamed aboard> that there were 12 starships in the same class as the Enterprise. About a decade ago there was a Star Trek "event" at the Memorial Coloseium in Portland which featured "The Cage" (in B&W cuz NBC threw away the color version!) and the blooper reel. Gene also gave a fascinating lecture about how he "talked" with the characters when he was developing the framework of the series. Afterwards Gene answered questions from the audience, one of which concerned the number of starships in the various fleets. His answer: As many as he felt like. -- Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX ..!tektronix!reed!omen!caf Omen Technology Inc 17505-V NW Sauvie IS RD Portland OR 97231 Voice: 503-621-3406 Modem: 503-621-3746

Starfleet must allow total dunderheads to command their ships! > :-= (Gnashing of teeth!) :-) > Well, during World War II, the U.S. lost the Lexington, Yorktown, Hornet, and Wasp that I know of off the top of my head-- all front line carriers. Besides, exploration of unknown territory is intrinsically hazardous, and, at least in the Star Trek universe, there are so many different groups who are belligerently disposed towards visitors in one way or another that the situation can hardly be described as peacetime. Tho, of course, only the Enterprise had the writers on her side to come up with a brilliant solution before the last commercial, but even that has changed, hasn't it? <Sigh> Actually, I would suspect that in a real universe, you might not know which ships are destroyed and which aren't. Some of them would just disappear, and never turn up. Mark Modig ihnp4!sftri!mom

I just recalled an episode, "The Tholian Web", in which the Enterprise is involved in rescueing a starship which I believe was called the Defiant. Its' crew went insane and were all dead, due to being interspacially trapped. I don't recall the ship number or the captain's name. The ship was lost presumably in another parallel universe; Kirk was marooned on board and eventually saved by a balky transporter. Gary Huska Infopro Systems -- 73's, Gary M.
