"This Side of Paradise" -- Leila Kalomi (Jill Ireland) says, "You never did tell me your first name." "You couldn't pronounce it," Spock replies. I don't think that the name was ever revealed. "The Way to Eden" -- Chekov's old flame calls him "Pavel Andreovitch." Mark Paulin ...tektronix!tekmdp!markp

As almost a direct quote from the series, Spock talking to Kirk as I recall, Spock does indeed have a first name, but it is unpronouncable by humans. I like that. But then, in Court Martial shouldn't the computer have been able to pronounce it? "But why would you wish to put our Captain in a bag?" Michael S. I have a theory on Spock's first name derived totally from the series, I believe some of the novelists have contradicted it. First, in "This Side of Paradise", the Girl says "I don't even know your first name." to which Spock replies "You couldn't pronounce it." In "Journey to Babel", Kirk refers to Amanda as "Mrs. Sarek" to which she responds "Amanda, please, Captain. I'm afraid you couldn't pronounce the family name." These are from memory, I may have a word or two out of place. Anyway, this indicates that Vulcans' first names are their patrilinial names, while their last names are their familiar names.

One of the recent Star Trek novels -- ISHMAEL by Barbara Hambly -- shows Spock's first name as S'chn T'gai. This name is also given as the first name of Spock's father, Sarek -- lending support to the theory that it is a patrilineal family name. I do not know whether this name has been officially blessed by the Great Bird of the Galaxy. :-} If you haven't already read ISHMAEL, by the way, I highly recommend it. However, if you haven't read it yet, please *don't* start out by looking for the reference to Spock's first name -- you'll run headlong into a major plot-spoiler if you do. -- Rich Wales // UCLA Computer Science Department // +1 213-825-5683 3531 Boelter Hall // Los Angeles, California 90024 // USA ARPA: wales@LOCUS.UCLA.EDU -or- wales@UCLA-LOCUS.ARPA UUCP: ...!(ucbvax,ihnp4)!ucla-cs!wales
