[net.poems] FOR GORDIE

FOR GORDIE (WHO ALWAYS LEFT THE LIGHT ON)

Those nights we crawled together,
Half bold,
Half afraid,
Yet always aware
We would leave no evidence
On one another's lives.

Someone might see the experience
On our faces.
And beat us down
With words.

So we crawled.
Always laughing
Because we were the leaders
And we could not cry.

I can't remember why
I never came back
To that room.
Life took hold somewhere.
I began to believe
That morning was a beginning
And not an end.

I wanted to tell you,
I wanted to hide against you
One last time.

Today
I wouldn't be afraid to park my car
In front of your house
In the daylight.
But then...
The reason for the darkness
Is gone.
