Richard Brautigan, for those who do not know him, is a San Francisco poet. He was most prolific in the 60's and early 70's. His appeal to me is his ability with imagery. Here are three short samples. Monitor your responses to the first one. It effects people differently. - - - - I Feel Horrible. She Doesn't I feel horrible. She doesn't love me and I wander around the house like a sewing machine that's just finished sewing a turd to a garbage can lid. - - - - Most people react with a laughing bark reflecting empathy with feelings of despair combined with a sensory overload and humor. What are your reactions? - - - - The Pill Versus the Springhill Mine Disaster When you take your pill it's like a mine disaster. I think of all the people lost inside of you. - - - - Kafka's Hat With the rain falling surgically against the roof, I ate a dish of ice cream that looked like Kafka's hat. It was a dish of ice cream tasting like an operating table with the patient staring up at the ceiling. - - - - Richard Brautigan (From "The Pill Versus the Springhill Mine Disaster," 1968, Dell Publishing Co.)
