Humility
I marvel that I can no more evoke
The misery that overwhelmed me then,
The numbing fear of shapeless things
That hovered over one of dearest kin.
In those bleak days when I was void
Of every feeling not akin to pain,
When hope was hidden in perpetual cloud,
I had no thought for any self-concern.
My sense of pride was totally submerged,
I needed every contact I could find.
I knew humility and was sustained,
Sorrow connected me to all mankind.
The blackest clouds at last began to thin
And fear diminished slowly day by day,
My spirits lifted, pride returned -
Humility was also swept away.
