                    The Street

There was a time when the world was younger,
People had life and their lives had love.
There was a time when caring was natural,
Horizons expanding and things to learn of.

Walking down the street there was bustling business;
People had purpose, yet could stop for a while
To help a lost time, give the time to a lady,
Time for the elderly, time for a smile.

A smile can entail the movement of lips,
Raising your chin with a look in your eyes
That bespeaks spontaneity, happiness of spirit;
All that can happen, to one's surprise.

Now people seem tired as they trudge down the street,
The world has aged and the people seem old.
Heads watch the ground in fear of surroundings,
and if a head raises the smile is cold.
