SLEEPING WITH FIRELIGHT

After you left I still needed to use my body

I walked through the house

                    eating a buttered roll

            shutting the lights

        securing the locks

                  pulling the shades

closing the door to my double bed room

    leaving myself in the firelight

        flames wavering and crackling

                   fire burning and speaking

             throwing shadows in a dance.

I took a soft and shallow sleep

resting with the feel of you

in so many of my muscles

waking now to some voice it seemed

part of my dreaming, part of your speaking

from the fire, through the fire

                               still warming my house.

                      FIRE
               --------------------

fire--
the hot fire i saw
reflecting in your dark, italian eyes
held a fascination for me
unlike that i've ever known.

fire--
a compelling, dangerous flicker of flame
hypnotizing me instantly.
"Play with fire", you said
"And you'll get burned"--a daring smile on your face.

fire--
just a glint waiting patiently
behind your ever-so-cool exterior
taunting and teasing me
wanting me to draw nearer.

fire--
ahead i forged
ignoring the warning signs
of the steadily increasing heat,
just needing a closer look at what lay ahead.

fire--
finally where you wanted me
you pulled me that final step into the flame
and made true the words you once said,
"Play with fire and you'll get burned".
