SONNET #2 --------- I took a walk today out on the beach And watched the other people walking, too. The waves rolled in, the waves slid out, and each Warm wave, while like the rest, held something new. Hawaiian shorts and horn-rimmed glasses knelt To sift through shells and pluck the ripest ones. Young couples talked of how they no longer felt, And how they thought it time for new loved ones. The children cried, the parents stopped the cries. The muscle shirts bared big beer guts to all. A sea eagle flew by. I closed my eyes And listened to the new waves' crash and fall. The eagle circled back, just out of reach. I think that I'll move farther down the beach.
