How can it be that this newsgroup is about to shut down when i have
just joined up? i am a new member from montreal, canada, and a veteran
cold water west coast diver.
moved east a while back, but haven't heard much about diving in the ol'
northeast. sure would like to hear from any divers up my way, say
vermont or maine, or even new hampshire.

bye the bye, in case you haven't heard, there is a terrific diving
effort underway at Duke University called DAN, Diver's Alert Network.
This is a 24 hour emergency medical hotline for diving related injuries.
THey also publish a newsletter which talks about diving medicine and
diving problems for the lay person. i can post more info for those
interested.

Please pass along the information.

I am moving from the mid-Atlantic to Southern California in the near future
- Irvine to be exact. Anyone care to pass on information about reputable
dive shops, good dive spots, etc for that area?

*** REALIGN THIS PLACE WITH YOUR MASSAGE ***

I probably should have used (r)eply instead of (f)ollowup for this but
I thought the extra traffic on this newsgroup might save it from
  extinction.

I moved away from Southern Cal a year ago and so far, the thing I miss the
most (the only thing, really (No flames, please.)) is the good, local diving.

My favorite spots were the coves just north of Laguna Beach (Bird Rock,
Picnic Beach, Divers Cove, Shaw's Cove, Cresent Bay, etc.). These are all
about 15 minutes drive from Irvine. If you drop your buddy with gear at
the beach, you can park about four blocks away (closer in parking is
metered and has two hour limits not to mention $15 tickets). The
residential area along Jasmine (off PCH) usually has plenty of parking
  even during peak season.

The underwater park off of Casino Point (Catalina Island) is pretty good,
too. There are a couple of wrecks, one in the park, the other close by,
both in less than 85' of water. There's a book called Diving West (I
think) that you can get at most of the dive shops in So. Cal. and it lists
the major dive spots from Baja to Santa Barbara plus the Channel Islands.
It's well worth the $5, especially if you want to do alot of day trips.

As far as dive shops go, Laguna Sea Sports (see ads in Skin Diver),
located in Laguna Beach and Costa Mesa; Black Barts in El Toro; are the
shops I usually went to. The prices seemed fair and the people were nice.

Speaking of nice people, I left a diving buddy behind when I moved (he
keeps threatening to dive the Great Northwest) so if you need a buddy, try
Pete Carpenter (ihnp4!rlgvax!ccicpg!pete). I think he just earned Dive
Master and he's only drowned 3 buddies so far :-).

So much for history. Now, anyone in Oregon or Washington know of some
decent dive spots (lakes or anything!) within 2 hours drive (or less) of
Portland? Trips to Peuget Sound are fine once in a while but I'd like to
find something local. Has anyone out there dove Lake Merwyn, Wa.? Please
post all replies to the net under this newsgroup. Let's keep
  net.rec.scuba alive and well!

  Ken
