[net.micro.68k] Codata software support?

noel@cubsvax.UUCP (12/27/83)

To whom it may concern:

We have two Codata system 3300's which hardware is quite nice.
However they have some problems third-handing UniSoft UNIX.
Specifically their 2- or 3-person software dept hasn't been
able to get uucp running between Codatas and other machines (Vaxes
running 4.1) although they have known of the problem for over 6
months (they "should have" known for over a year).

This problem has been mentioned before; it's due to the checksum routine
in UUCP being written in such a way that it depends on the order in which
casts and other operations are done. I remember hearing it said that UniSoft
fixed it in later UUCPs (which would, of course, keep those later UUCPs from
talking to earlier UniSoft UUCPs unless they changed UUCP to recognize
different versions of the protocol). My question is: why didn't this show
up earlier in testing - surely they had some PDP-11s or VAX-11s in-house?

Unfortunately, Codata didn't have any VAXes of PDP11s in-house.
I don't know if UniSoft did or not. But I do fault Codata for
not testing it with a dialup to SOMEONE's VAX, and for not fixing it!

DUAL uses UniSoft's uucp, and has since the day I walked in the door,
last march. I got DUAL connected into the net under v7, we are
currently a System III system, with hopes of System V soon. UUCP has
always talked to VAXEN, PDP-11/70's (Thank you Phil Ngai of AMD for
polling us initially!) and other DUALs.

My understanding is that CoData is a bit slow in updating their
customer's software, when new releases become available. There is a
company in Berkeley that has a CoData box, wants to talk to us, tried
to talk to us, and failed. I let them know that this is a known bug,
and that CoData \must/ have the fix by now, and they're still waiting
for CoData to provide a newer UUCP. (3 weeks now...)

The point being, it ain't UniSoft's fault that CoData boxes don't speak
uucp now. It's been fixed.

	Who, me biased?
