[net.micro.68k] More on System V/68 licensing

mats@dual.UUCP (Mats Wichmann) (06/29/84)

Other news on the System V/68 distribution: it does support the common object
file format. The 68000 magic number is 0520 (Vax is 0570 and 0575). The
status of the compiler is not completely clear; I should know this by
tomorrow. Source for this was tied up in some strange problems - notably
that AT&T was thinking of licensing it as part of SGS (the Software
Generation System). SGS itself, however, is a cross-compiler package that
runs on the Vax and generates code for the 68000 (files are: ar, as, cc,
conv, cpp, dis, dump, ld, lorder, nm, size, strip). Thus, SGS does not
make sense to supply with System V/68 - instead they would supply native
version of these tools. Presumably, when more generic ports become
available, it might become possible to buy a 16000 SGS to run on a
68000, a 286 SGS to run on a Vax, and so forth.
