[net.micro.68k] VME/10s and System V/68 Unix. Do they exist?

robert@nmtvax.UUCP (02/08/85)

[ Food for thought (or at least bugs)]

Does anyone out there run Unix System V/68 on VME/10s? We
have one at New Mexico Tech that hasn't been messed with in the
eight months we've had the software. (I just found the software
registration paperwork the day before yesterday.) Has anyone
kept up to date with the updates? Has anyone (including Motorola)
even bothered with them? Am I the only one that thinks the
keyboards are garbage?

Does anyone care?

                                      Thanks!

Yep, we have several of them here.

Yep; system V/68, Release 2.8 is actually worth using. (Much faster than
Release 2.7 was.) There is still no "shl" (shell layers -- Bell's (oops,
AT&T's) answer to csh's job control) yet, and their shell has no shell
functions yet, but otherwise the software seems pretty solid. (But don't
try ptrace with an odd address...)

Is there anyone out there who thinks they're not?
Don't even think of using "vi" with them. Try emacs instead.
If you have enough memory. Less than 1 Meg is just asking for
trouble.

Other notes:

Don't rely too heavily on the serial card (MVME400), and thoroughly test
the ones you get. (Unless they're connected to a generous terminal like
a Zenith/Heath 29, you'll need a cable with pins 5,6,8 and 20 all wired
in common on the VME side.) When the card goes bonkers, reboot. The
serial driver will need to be improved before they'll sell many of these
machines.

Off and on there have been questions put to the net regarding Un*x V/68
and Motorola products. Hence, this reply is to the net. Some of this has
been said before. Kindly pardon the repitition .. some listeners are new to
this discussion.
Motorola Microsystems manufactures the VME/10 (and other systems, as
well as VERSAbus and VMEbus board level products) and is charged with the
generic 68K microports of Un*x System V for AT&T (we call it SYSTEM V/68).
We have been on-net for about 6 months and several of us are active article
submitters (mot!al, mot!fred, mot!edski).
The first line of support is always your local sales office or your
distributor. If you remember to fill out your software registration form
your chances of learning about updates is greatly enhanced; without this,
you really haven't a prayer (remember, product announcements over netnews are
"verboten"). During warranty or if you have a service contract, Four Phase
Customer Service Ops are the ones to contact. If you don't mind a bit of
turnaround wait time, you can contact them via mot!mkasse, mot!stieg,
or best mot!cso.

p.s. you should have seen what the proto keyboard looked like, if you think
this one is bad. the only grump i have now is the ESC key. you?
