[net.micro.68k] Opinions on Regulus

myers@nbs-amrf.UUCP (Don Myers) (10/30/85)

I am interested in Regulus, a real-time UNIX from SBE. Does anyone have
any experience or opinions about it? Should I stay clear or what?

We have been using Regulus extensively for about one and a half years.
We use it as our primary program development system, but have not made
extensive use of its realtime features.

So far it has been extremely stable, with no system crashes whatsoever
(except once when the power went away for about a half hour). Interface
libraries make it look almost identical to V6, V7, or S3.

The main problems we have had with it have been:

	1. File names are only 12 characters long.

	2. Integers are 16 bits (on the 68K). Porting sloppy
code from a VAX means lots of int/pointer problems.

It seems to be an overall good system for its purpose, uses less
resources than UNIX, and provides realtime capability of a sort.
