[net.micro.68k] info-68k <-> mod.computers.68k: no

gnu@hoptoad.uucp (John Gilmore) (01/30/86)

I have a problem with this.

There is already a good place to put articles about the 68k --
net.micro.68k. This is a nice quiet group (except for one spasm around
os-9) with technical info and questions and not much else. I think
that if info-68k should be gatewayed to the Usenet, it should be a
two-way gateway with net.micro.68k.

[rise onto soapbox] I'm getting tired of having to go to two
newsgroups for everything -- net.lang.c and mod.std.c, net.sources and
mod.sources, etc. There's no flame problem or traffic problem in
net.micro.68k and we all know that net groups just function better in
the current software.

I have a paranoid fantasy that if we gateway info-68k to a pseudo mod
group then in six months some net knight in shining armor will come
along and decide that net.micro.68k should really get folded into this
mod group and deleted. The 68000 family is my best area of expertise
and I've tried to help out everybody with a question on net.micro.68k
for many years. Frankly I feel a bit fatherly toward the group and
would rather that it remain the focus of 68k discussions on the
Usenet.

[back to pavement...]

Another issue is that I seem to recall being on the info-68k mailing
list many months ago and getting back off it because from my point of
view it seemed pretty trashy. This is a dim recollection and I don't
recall specifics other than "it wasn't worth my time". I am not
willing to decide based on such an old misremembered opinion.

I propose that I (and other interested usenetters) subscribe to it as a
mailing list for a month or two and report back to the net whether we
think it's worth gatewaying -- either to net.micro.68k or to a mod group.
