The idea of building my own micro has always fascinated me. And lately I have been wondering about how I might find parts and instructions to build myself a 68k system. I read Computer Shopper regularly, but it is even difficult to find fully built 68k systems for sale (apart from Amiga, ST, etc.) much less boards and such! Even "chip companies" don't seem to carry the 68000 line of CPUs. I am interested in running something like OS-9 or CP/M-68k. If you know where I might find the chips, mother boards for 68k systems (un- or partially-populated) or anything else that may come in handy in such a project, or if this is a pipe dream because such things aren't available, please mail to me and I will summarize to the net. Thanks in advance. -- If I could walk THAT way... Dave Iannucci @ St. Joseph's University, Philadelphia [40 00' N 75 15' W] {{ihnp4 | ucbvax}!allegra | {psuvax1}!burdvax | astrovax}!sjuvax!iannucci

u can certainly buy 68Ks from motorola, no? If you want board products, get hold of EDN, they seem to get advertisers for such things. Also, there is a publishing house in San Diego California who has been putting out "Buyer's Guides" for many different types of board products like multibus and vmebus. Their name is Ironoak. SOrry, my copies are in my California office, and I am here in Germany so I can't give you a better address. Disclaimer: I don't even know if Ironoak is still around, I don't work or talk or anything with them, but I found their books useful on several occasions. david smyth seismo!unido!ztivax!david

This is getting redundant, since I've mentioned these 2 magazines so many times before, but the best magazines to find OS-9 products are 68 Micro Journal and to a lesser extent for 68000 products, the Rainbow. There are apparently at least 5 distinctly different 68K single board computers on the market, 3 of which are distributed under a few names. These 3 are the Mizar board, the Helix and the Gimix boards. The Emerald boards are their own. The other major single board 68K systems are the Motel Cypher (advertised in Byte March) which is an all-in-one style computer and another one that's advertised occasionally in byte which is an Educationally oriented computer as I recall (I can't remember its name right now). There is also a Canadian single board educational computer by Waterloo (something or other). Lastly, I have heard that Microbox in England will have a single board 68K system out soon too. I'm planning on buying the Cypher myself, but the OS-9 port hasn't been completed yet (as far as I know) and I don't want to bother with CP/M 68K. It also has a Z-80 onboard, but then that's no better than my Color Computer anyway.
