MOTOROLA PLANS 32-BIT PROCESSOR [sigh]

Motorola, Inc. has struck back in the microprocessor wars, announcing
plans for a new chip that packs 300,000 transistors on a sliver of
silicon.

The company's announcement of its MC68030 chips comes the week after a
buzz of publicity over a rival 32-bit microprocessor, the 80386 from
Intel, Corp, which was introduced last year and will power Compaq
Computer's fast new personal computer.

Microprocessors are the brains of electronic devices [sigh].

Motorola, based in Schaumburg, Ill., said it expects to begin making
its MC68030 chip in silicon next March. It said the chip would offer
twice the performance of its MC68020, which was introduced in June,
1984.

The new chip will perform at an average speed of eight million
instructions a second.

It's hard keeping mum about such a device.
