[net.notes] Newest version of notes wanted

I would like to use notesfiles instead of the readnews or vnews interface and
I would appreciate it if those in the know could direct me to the best
currently available version of notes.  I have heard that the people at HP
labs have an improved version; is it available?  If so, from whom?  Failing
that, what is the best version to use under Berkeley 4.2?  (I am aware that
notes is distributed with 4.2, but I am informed that it is an ancient
release.  Is this true?)
