[net.notes] how many sites run notes?

z@rocksvax.UUCP (Jim Ziobro) (08/02/85)

Anyone have an estimate of how many sites run notes? I know at least 3 sites
in the Rochester area do. I will summarize.

	We run notes, NYU's version.

One thing I'm still not clear/happy about is how to post articles
using that version of notes. We have tried running newsoutput regularly
but since our news comes in through the news system and we feed other sites
through the news system, we have found no apparently satisfactory way
of obtaining just the articles we have posted from our notes back to our
news system.
In the best case, we say /usr/lib/notes/newsoutput -t cmcl2
(cmcl2 is our news feed) and we get back not only the articles we've posted
through notes, but all the articles posted via news from sites downstream.
Any suggestions ? Remember this is NYU's relatively recently version
of notes. The old NYU version used to work fine.

Re: How many sites run notes?

See the bi-monthly articles in newsgroup mod.newslists by
sesismo!newsstats titled approximately "Known News Versions In Use".
A few months ago, I counted the notes sites in the list, and it
was about a sixth of the total.

That isn't going to give you a complete count. We, for example, run notes
for a few local discussion groups where privacy is important, but wouldn't
dare interface it to usenet. It therefore won't show up in the "Known
News Versions in Use" list.
