Has anybody out there ever successfully gotten a message read by the
"Home Companion" folks on the air? Do they read most of the messages
they get or just a selection? How long in advance should you send
something in?

From what I saw when they were in Boston he generally picks a
random number from the audience (who leave them in a box) and
then reads some more off of a sheet (evidently copies of those
mailed in). The number he reads is dependent on how the timing
of the show is going. The letters provide the filler so that
everything works out exactly right.

Actually, I have been on the show several times with my band (no brag, jes'
fact) and have watched Margaret Moos, the producer, make up the typed list of
messages. The messages come mostly from requests from the audience, but she
threw in about 25% of them from fan mail. Incidentally, I know for a fact
that being on the show don't guarantee that your message gets read, even if
you DO hand it directly to Margaret...as someone said, the messages are used
to pad the program out....

P.S. I don't think it's been offically released yet, but there is a NEW
PHC record coming out in about 2-4 weeks, called "Tourists". It's a
compilation of the some of the stuff from when the show went on the road
the past couple of years...
