[net.wobegon] 10th Anniversary show disappointing

nathanm@hp-pcd.UUCP (nathanm) (07/09/84)

The show goes live at 5 pm central time. I saw a live road show
from Ashland, Oregon; sure enough, it went on at 3 pm (pacific
time). Some stations tape off of the satellite and broadcast later.

Somehow, the 10th anniversary show never quite lived up to
my hopes. It felt like the Boston Pops playing a Stokowski
arraingement of a Bach sonata. I.e., overdone. "Let's
have a chorus, and some trumpets, and some more violins --
it's a birthday party, you know."

I really missed the relaxed funkiness of the PHC I know and loved:
didn't hear a peep from Red Maddox, for example.

I only caught part of the 10th, while driving on my way to a gig. I'm afraid
I can't agree with Martin Minow - I liked the big band concept. My question
is, having seen first-hand how crowded the stage is normally, where did
they PUT everybody?!? There is also NO green room, and barely any wings at
all, so it must not of been very comfortable.

As for Red Maddock, is he back on the show again? When I was out there
several months ago he told me he was going into the hospital (again) for some
major surgery....he may not be back yet on the show -- since I haven't been
listening lately (shame on you!) I don't know if he has reappeared yet. He
definitely was not playing on the 10th show - it wasn't his style.

Will-

I think I speak for most PHC devotees (most of whom may be too
shy to speak much at all) when I say that 2 hrs is not too long
a time slot. But since your whimsical attention span is
(arguably) shorter than ours, your idea of recording
the show on a reel-to-reel (but why not cassette?...) tape
sounds like a good solution.

5PM central time is indeed the real time for the show.
On some stations the show is delayed. For a nationwide
schedule, look up the news on net.wobegon from around Mar 11.

>at a time.

reel-to reel??? What part of the country are you living in? You can't even
find those around here any more! Do you have running water? Perhaps even
electrical wiring in your house?  :-}

Seriously, though, does this work its way to the west coast? Specifically the
bay area? I love the idea.

I don't find 2 hours too long, since I can rarely be near the radio for the
whole time. So I appreciate the length of the show, since this means I can
often at least catch some of it. I appreciate the gentleness of the whimsy,
since it means I can cook or tidy up or otherwise get down to to what hast to
be done and still listen.

Does this program make it to the west coast? More specifically, the San
Francisco bay area?
