Well, I don't know about everyone else, but I was very interested
at the suggestion that net.wobegon be the repository of all things
"folk" (music, dance, arts, etc), until net.folk-arts (or something
to that effect) is summoned into being. To that end, I thought I'd
submit a hefty article, mentioning just some of the possibilities
that come to mind, as topics for discussion. This list is limited
to my little corner of folk topics, so feel free to plunge in with
suggestions:
Folk Music
Folk singers/songwriters (who's playing where, when, who's good, etc.)
Bluegrass
Old-timey string band (Greg, are you listening?)
International
Specific instruments (players, teachers, exchanging songs/tunes):
Guitar
Banjo
Mandolin
Fiddle (Greg?!)
Bass
Flute
Dulcimer (any flavor)
Bagpipes
Pennywhistle
Dance: (where to go learn, where to dance)
Squares (discussing new calls? How to call a dance?)
Contras
Morris Dancing
Polkas
Clogging (and unclogging?)
Other stuff that I can't think of at the moment but I KNOW there
must be a lot of floating around. Some of this is regional (with
respect to who's playing where), but that shows up in most groups,
anyway. Actually, compiling a sourcebook, nationwide, of things
folk seems like it would be real neat (done before, perhaps, but
via computer?)
So, you shy persons, get off your duff and post a news item about
your favorite aspect of folk music, dance, whatever. If it happens
to have to do with APHC, all the better. If you have friends that
don't read this newsgroup, but would be interested, tell them about
it! Don't worry about embarrasement, we're all shy people (which is
why this newsgroup is so quiet), so feel free to contribute.
If anyone is interested in starting a very active debate, you might
want to put forth YOUR definition of "folk music"... go ahead, give
it a shot!
Keep eating those biscuits,
Eric
