[net.wobegon] Folk Music mail order sources

barnett@ut-sally.UUCP (Lewis Barnett) (11/03/84)

[ My, they're tasty... ]

Since I haven't seen any further postings in response to the request for
mail order addresses, and I just happen to be enjoying PHC at the moment,
I thought I'd share my entire list of mail order sources.

For comprehensive coverage, try:

	Andy's Front Hall
	Drawer A
	Voorheesville, NY 12186

	Shanachie Records
	Dalebrook Park
	Ho-ho-kus, NJ 07423

Both of these houses run specials for volume purchases from time to time.
Shanachie is actually a record company, but if you write and ask for the
"Morningstar Catalogue," you'll get a document nearly as fully stocked as
the AFH catalogue.

As far as individual record companies go, I've ordered from the following:

Green Linnet Records, Inc.	--concentrates on Irish music, but
70 Turner Hill Road also includes some New England
New Canaan, CT 06840 folk music titles.

Swallowtail Records --a *very* small company specializing
Box 843 in Old Timey music, but significant
Ithaca, NY 14850 (in my mind) because of their John
					  Roberts and Tony Barrand releases.

Flying Fish Records --lots of good stuff here.
	1304 W. Schubert
	Chicago, Ill. 60614

June Appal Recordings --Specializes in music from the Ap-
	P.O. Box 743 palachian Mtns. Dalglish & Larsen's
Whitesburg, KY 41858 first two (delightful) hammered
dulcimer albums were on this label.

I haven't actually ordered from this one, but it looks interesting:

Carthage Records, Inc. --this label brags that its artists
611 Broadway are "obscure," but they include the
Suite 415 McGarrigles and Richard Thompson.
	New York, NY 10012

And, for completeness, though it isn't quite a folk label...

	Windham Hill
	P.O. Box 9388
	Stanford, CA 94305

There are a couple that I haven't written to or ordered from, but which I'd
be interested in hearing about. One is Folkways, one of the largest folk
labels in existence. Andy's Front Hall just says "We can order any of the
1400 records in the Folkways catalogue," but don't list them due to space
considerations. The other is Takoma Records, John Fahey's label. I've
heard that this label started out in Fahey's garage up in D.C., and wasn't
sure that it still existed until I got a copy of Maddy Prior's solo album,
"Woman in the Wings," and found that it was a Takoma release.

Hope this is useful to someone...
