[net.wobegon] Wobegon to us. The kiss of Death?

blair@yogi.DEC (A note from the bear cave...) (11/06/85)

Joe Yao asks if the flurish of articles on PHC, & GK
is a kis of death?

I think not, but... All Things Considered interviewed him
a few months back and Garrison's said that he would expect
to be doing the show for about three more years then move onto
something else.... eventually moving back to Lake Wobegon.

The child in me felt sad when I heard that.

With apologies to those not in on the joke, and especially to
Time, Inc. for perpetuating an unworthy canard, the reference
was to a postulate in the last decade that appearing on the
cover of Time Magazine meant that a phenomenon had achieved
the ultimate in middle-class value, and was therefore shortly
to disappear from the "current" scene, never to be heard from
again.
I prob'ly shouldn't have referenced this. Brings too much
attention on this poor shy person in the Midwest (of Maryland).	;-)

I heard the Seattle broadcast (two and a half times!) over the weekend,
and I have a sinking feeling about an otherwise great show...

We all have noticed the regular appearance of Chet Atkins (is that how
you spell it?) on the show, and this broadcast was no exception. But
in the past Atkins & Company have kept to the accoustic, bluegrass
kind of stuff that goes well with a wood stove, a 'biskit' and a
winter Saturday evening...

... Well this show we were 'treated' to the first signs of a change
in the show; Electric Guitar! I'll bet you a years supply of
Ah-Hooah Hot Sauce that we'll see more of this in the future, with
a love-sick Garrison taking more and more vacations, and Atkins
left to mind the store, until finally we will end up with yet
another edition of 'Grand Ole Opry'! The only positive note
about this scenario is that such a show (without Garrison) would
be doomed to failure...

Well, I did enjoy the seattle show (twice; it is re-broadcast here
on sunday afternoons). Still getting an assortment of guests, too.

I should also point out that, by this time, the "opry" isn't the opry
anymore; so one show like it wouldn't be too bad. Straight down-hill
when they moved to this "theme park", abandoning the Ryman. One bull
auction on the new stage for the novelty won't rescue the whole affair.

Still, we can hope that GK doesn't plan on taking too many more
vacations (in Denmark or elsewhere, tho NFL seems likely). Surely he's
used up this year's vacation -- two months already!
