GK's first Hawaiian appearance since last November occurred this evening at the Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall. Some of the highlights: He has his family with him this time, unlike the situation last year, before his marriage. At that time his fiance was 13,000 miles away, and tonight he repeated a song he had sung then lamenting the distance between them. Perhaps his wife was in the audience -- but he did not say so. However, his son Jason was on stage playing bass guitar with the band from Iowa. Unlike last time, Peter Ostroushko, Chet Atkins, Johnny Gimble, etc., were all absent -- and it was a real loss. Also, the program is very light on Hawaiian music, unlike last time when there was the Sons of Hawaii, the Kahe Leilani group from Kauai, and the Kamehameha Schools Choir of 68 plus their hula group. Sigh. Taj Mahal appeared a lot -- actually too much for my taste. But the high point of the show was the report from Lake Wobegon which spoke of a group of 25 Lutheran Ministers from the Norwegian Evangelical Synod who were touring Minnesota in a seminar on "Rural Communities in Crisis". The group itself has a bit of a crisis when they take a tour on an overloaded boat in the lake and end up standing in 5 feet of water. They are saved by a small boy 15 feet away from them who, standing in water up to his waist, tells them, "It's not so deep over here." Moral -- don't make a lot of other people's problems. Before they go under, when the plywood platform of the pontoon craft is level with the water, it appears from the shore that the ministers are performing a "real miracle". Unfortunately I will not see tomorrow's broadcast show (which is at 11:45 Hawaiian time) due to a mainland trip. Hope someone reports it here. -- Scott Allen {ihnp4|dual|vortex}!islenet!scott Honolulu, Hawaii 808-941-8500 808-947-3657 808-946-1919 Islenet
