Humphrey the whale, trapped inside San Francisco Bay last year as the result of a wrong turn during his annual migration, was released through the efforts of concerned environmentalists, has recently been sighted off the Farallon Islands during his annual migration. Another seagoing mammal, Buddy the cow, was trapped last November in the same area. Garrison told Buddy's story during his first Hawaii show, November 15, 1985. Buddy was rescued by the combined fleets of the Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy, and the American Dairy Association after running away from a dairy farm in central Minnesota, unable to face the prospect of another winter in which the milk was like sherbet and she would be forced to suffer the cold rough hands of Minnesota dairymen and the icy steel of milking machines. Through that great effort, Buddy is now safe and well in Hawaii, along with many of her fellow refugees from Minnesota, brought here safely by a massive funding effort sparked by Garrison himself last November, which made it possible to bring such animals safely across the Pacific on wide-bodied jets. These animals are now known collectively as "The Hawaiian Herd". The Herd was commemorated on the occasion of Garrison's second Hawaii visit, July 18-19, 1986, in a T-shirt prepared by the staff of Public Radio Station KHPR, Honolulu. The design shows the Herd in every color of the rainbow meandering across the white shirts. Collector's items, the shirts are available in both crew-neck and China style. The crew-neck shirts are available in small, medium, large, and extra-large for $13, and the China style come in only large and extra large for $15. They can be ordered directly from KHPR, and the proceeds will go to the support of the station's program, including Garrison's Hawaiian show. KHPR reports you can get these shirts by mailing your order directly to: Hawaii Public Radio 1335 Lower Campus Road Honolulu, HI 96822 Or you can telephone charge orders to the station during normal working hours (8 AM to 5 PM, Hawaii time) at (808)955-8821. -- Scott Allen {ihnp4|dual|vortex}!islenet!scott Honolulu, Hawaii 808-941-8500 808-947-3657 808-946-1919 Islenet
