You are absolutely correct.  There is no reason for there not to be ground
to earth lightning.  As a matter of fact, most lightning that does strike the
ground does start at the earth.  This behavior has been demonstrated many
times photographically.  The explanation is somewhat complicated, but is
well documented in the scientific literature.  If anyone would like a simplified
explaination, I will be happy to provide it by mail.
