[net.physics] Project Mohole

Rich Piner's assertion that project Mohole failed due to the
scientific naivte of the project engineers seems in itself to
be naive. It wasn't a netnews project! Also, I recall that the
point of it was just to collect deep samples and make studies
of the conditions. After all, no one had ever sampled the actual
mantle. It did have a lot of problems, but as I dimly recall, they
achieved some measure of success, in terms of their stated aims.

Project Mohole still exists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography as
the Deep Sea Drilling Project. It has been successful in advancing
techniques for ocean-bottom drilling and sea floor mapping, even if
they weren't able to drill a hole to the mantle.
