Rich Piner's assertion that project Mohole failed due to the scientific naivte of the project engineers seems in itself to be naive. It wasn't a netnews project! Also, I recall that the point of it was just to collect deep samples and make studies of the conditions. After all, no one had ever sampled the actual mantle. It did have a lot of problems, but as I dimly recall, they achieved some measure of success, in terms of their stated aims. Lew Mammel, Jr. ihuxr!lew

Project Mohole still exists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography as the Deep Sea Drilling Project. It has been successful in advancing techniques for ocean-bottom drilling and sea floor mapping, even if they weren't able to drill a hole to the mantle.
