[net.physics] What if they nuke N.Y. zq zt

tlw (05/09/83)

I need to know what effects would be observed if one of the
larger nuclear warheads that the Soviets possess were detonated
over New York City. I need to know what would be expected to
happen; 1 mile away, 5 miles, 20 miles, and as far away as
Boston, about 200 miles away. I also need to know some times
as to how fast the blast effects would propagate.

The question ''what if they bomb such-and-such a city'' is not
really a feasible one to answer. The Russians aren't goign
to bomb one city, they're gonna get all the big ones. You have
to take the entire effect. If they bomb NY, they're also going
to go for Ports Elizabeth and/or Newark (face it, that's one
of if not the largest trade centers on the East Coast), Boston,
DC, Philly, and Pittsburg.

What would happen if they nuked NY? The Boston Globe would carry a
front page article entitled "Hub Man Dies In Nuclear Blast", right beside
"Red Glow Lights Hub Horizon"...

There was a very good article in Scientific American
a couple of years ago, discussing the effects of a nuclear attack.
I particularly remember the highly detailed maps of the fallout
patterns to be expected from a strike on Boston.
