[net.physics] long lever - enough!

ech@pyuxll.UUCP (Ned Horvath) (08/12/83)

Can we please stop beating this dead horse? The "answer" depends solely
upon the speed with which information propagates from A to B and vice versa.

A to B: if B is waiting for her end to "move", then the speed
of propagation is upper-bounded by the speed of SOUND
in the lever material: for physical motions, the speed
of sound is, by definition, the speed at which adjacent
molecules interract and thereby "pass the word".

B to A: the problem explicitly says that E-M radiation will be
used, and just as above, the speed depends on the medium.
No matter, the delay is still inversely proportional to
the speed with which information propogates.

Enough?????

Poor guy. Must have too many deadlines to meet (I noticed that he didn't
hesitate in adding his own "flog" or two to the "dead" problem).
