[net.physics] Eddington/Kantor - postscript

sharp@kpnoa.UUCP (05/16/84)

I have looked at Kantor's "derivation" of the density of the Universe,
and it is identically equal to twice the closure density, which is the
density at which the Universe just fails to turn round and re-collapse
(in the standard Big-Bang). Modern Grand Unified Theories make a good
case for the density to be equal to closure, and observations are all
below .8 (typical measurement is 0.2 x 2 ^+-1 (i.e. uncertain by factor 2)).

As to the Universe being a black hole, this is a misunderstanding which arises
because both the U and the BH obey Einstein's equations, and there is a formal
identity (NOT a coincidence) between a BH's mass-radius relation and the
mass-radius relation for a marginally open/closed U (i.e. one with exactly
the closure density).

[Oh No! The magnetic eye!]

I think too much time is being spent in this group talking about this
Eddie Kantor. After all, he was just a short jew in black face who
went around rolling his eyes. Lets get back to more serious discuss...
...what..oh...Never Mind.
